I am passionate about…Responsible travel, or traveling as a means to understanding other communities and cultures, all while leaving a light footprint. Whenever possible I try to experience—and write about—eco-friendly hotels, tour operators that support local communities and ways in which travelers can give back to the places that they enjoy.

My personal style is…chic and suitcase friendly! I love pairing staples (my closet is full of button downs, breezy sundresses and cotton shorts in every color) with fashion finds I discover on the road: embroidered tunics from India, Mexican huaraches, hand-woven mochila bags from Colombia, and so on.

My three favorite places in Austin are…

—Clark’s Oyster Bar for its red fish and shoestring fries, not to mention a glass of bubbly and PEI oysters on ice.

—Lady Bird Lake’s hike and bike trail for the people (and bird!) watching.

—The Saturday morning farmers’ market in Republic Square Park. I go almost every weekend for ginger cream scones from the Cake and Spoon, Tamale Addiction’s poblano and cheese tamales, and seasonal greens and veggies from local farmers.

The best advice I’ve ever received is…A friend of mine, who opened a charter school in Brooklyn, recently shared the following quote with me by an Australian artist and activist named Lilla Watson. “If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.” I can’t stop thinking about it.

My role models are…my hard-working sisters, my mother (who doesn’t give a damn what other people think), and Jane Austen because she was such a prolific writer and feminist before her time.

The woman I aspire to be is…A working mom who isn’t afraid to admit how difficult it is to balance a job and family, travels the world with her kids in tow, and throws one hell of a dinner party.

Three new-to-me discoveries I’m excited about are…

  1. The hip Bywater District in New Orleans, where you can walk along waterfront trails, dive into a delicious shrimp Po-Boy at hole-in-the-wall Frady’s One Stop Food Store, and catch a high school marching band rehearsing on a neighborhood street.
  2. Kid-friendly finds in San Antonio such as the DoSeum, the new Witte Museum (dino lovers will be in heaven), and Southerleigh restaurant, where half pints can roll—and bake!—their own pretzel dough while you enjoy Gulf-sourced seafood and house-brewed IPAs.
  3. Mattie’s at Green Pastures in Austin’s Bouldin neigborhood! I could not be more excited about this spot. The house and grounds have been beautifully restored and the food—tender pork chops, bright farm-fresh salads, warm biscuits and buttery pâtés—is divine. I have a feeling it’s going to be our go-to special occasion spot.
