Wondering how we improved our business processes for creating our collections? We teamed up with Dell and McAfee for their Small But Mighty contest to show how the Katie Kime team creates our unique collections.
If you took a look in Katie’s office you will see hand drawn images, paintings, sketches and more attached to every surface available. She loves to surround herself with inspiration for the next pattern or collection that will emerge. Katie has been an artist since a very young age and even majored in it at Duke. I’ll never forget one of my first introductions to Katie’s process was our spring collection for 2015. She showed up to the office with 10 new paintings she had created and we were challenged with creating seamless patterns to use on our various product offerings.
Being a very visual person and hands on is Katie’s method to creating. And I, as a person who has lived her life in startups and surrounded by high tech, this process provided me with a unique challenge. How do you move a very tactile process to digital which is a necessary part of our being. We started by scanning in each painting, vectorizing each image, and then printing out the results. Katie would then draw in her changes and the process would go round and round until we landed on a final version. When you are in a startup every second counts so not only was this process challenging, it took up precious time that we needed to get our collections out each season.
Fast forward to today and the introduction of more affordable computers that incorporate a tablet with drawing capabilities. As a small business, technology can be expensive and hard to acquire but it is a necessary investment for the future. What once could take weeks or months to develop can now be completed in a week or two which shortens our collection lifecycle. Katie can be on the go and design new patterns or give feedback immediately on her changes to the design. And as another bonus we are saving on paper. Technology plays a key role in our business and the Dell Latitude 2-in-1 Laptop is one piece that has given us immediate value.
We love that no matter where our team is we can communicate ideas, create new patterns, and execute faster on our ideas because of the Dell Latitude. This has been the bridge between the old school method of creating with your sense and needing everything to be digital at lightening speed.
