Mayakoba

Eat, Stay, Play

by Jen Pinkston

Nestled in the heart of the Riviera Maya in Mexico, Mayakoba is a luxury development of four resorts located just north of Playa del Carmen. It’s a place where you can choose your own adventure, whether that’s lounging by the pool, packing in quality family time, or exploring the jungles, lagoons, and beaches in close proximity. Our founder, Katie, has been numerous times, so we got her to share her favorite places to eat, stay, and play when visiting this gem of a destination.

EAT

A slow breakfast at the hotel is our favorite way to start any day, but coffee and pastries at Cafe Maya at the Fairmont are cozy and quaint, too.

For lunch, make time to check out the tiny cantina at the Rosewood, La Fondita, for delicious tostadas and grab tacos at Taqueria El Rey del Taco in Playa del Carmen, just a short drive away. For a special night out, make a reservation at Casa del Lago at the Rosewood Mayakoba, where the ambiance is as spectacular as the Mediterranean-inspired menu. For an unexpectedly amazing Thai food experience in Mexico, you have to try Saffron, possibly the most romantic destination in Mayakoba.

Don’t miss the churros and chocolate at Churrería El Moro— a sweet end to any meal. Be sure to make a reservation at Zapote Bar for drinks. The craft cocktails and live music are excellent, but the vibes are beatable in Mayakoba.

STAY

Mayakoba consists of 4 resorts: Andaz, Fairmont, Rosewood, and Banyan Tree. There is a lagoon running through the entire property with frequent water taxi service, so regardless of where you stay, you can easily visit each one, even if just for a drink.

Rosewood is the most luxe of the four properties, with deluxe overwater lagoon suites and rooms that feature water views, private plunge pools, and outdoor showers.

The most family-friendly (and budget-friendly) option is the Fairmont Mayakoba, which offers spacious rooms, a kids’ club, and activities that make the most of the area’s natural beauty.

If you’re looking for a more intimate experience, the Andaz Mayakoba is a chic boutique hotel that seamlessly blends contemporary design with the natural landscape, and the Banyan Tree Mayakoba is perfect for those seeking a private villa with a serene setting, complete with a personal pool and outdoor shower.

PLAY

Mayakoba is a paradise for those who love outdoor activities and natural beauty. Begin your day with a sunrise paddleboard session in the calm waters of the lagoon, or take a guided kayak tour through the mangroves to spot local wildlife. For golf enthusiasts, the El Camaleón Golf Course, designed by Greg Norman, offers a challenging and scenic round of golf that winds through jungle, mangroves, and oceanfront.

Explore the nearby cenotes for a refreshing swim in crystal-clear waters or take a day trip to the ancient ruins of Tulum to immerse yourself in the rich history of the region. If you’re looking for relaxation, spend an afternoon at one of Mayakoba’s beach clubs, where you can sip on a cocktail and soak up the sun. Finally, end your day with a sunset catamaran cruise along the Riviera Maya coast, complete with breathtaking views and the gentle sway of the sea.
